Day Trips from Puerto Vallarta
Explore the amazing destinations surrounding Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta is surrounded by incredible destinations perfect for day trips. From bohemian surf towns to secluded beaches, tequila country to Mexico's second-largest city, there's an adventure for everyone.
Sayulita
A bohemian surf town with a laid-back hippie vibe. Known for its colorful streets, surf culture, great restaurants, and lively nightlife. The beach has gentle waves perfect for learning to surf.
Tip: Go on a weekday to avoid weekend crowds. The main beach can get very busy.
San Pancho (San Francisco)
A quieter, more upscale alternative to Sayulita. This charming village has a beautiful beach, excellent restaurants, art galleries, and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Tip: Combine with Sayulita for a full day exploring both towns.
Yelapa
A remote fishing village with no roads accessible only by boat. Famous for its waterfalls, fresh pie sold by local ladies, and authentic Mexican village atmosphere.
Tip: Take the morning boat and return by 4-5pm (last boats). The waterfall hike is about 30 minutes each way.
Marietas Islands
A protected national park famous for the "Hidden Beach" (Playa del Amor) - a beach inside a collapsed volcanic crater. Excellent for snorkeling and bird watching.
Tip: Book tours in advance. Access to Hidden Beach is limited and sometimes closed for conservation. Even without beach access, the snorkeling is incredible.
Boca de Tomatlán
A small fishing village at the mouth of the Horcones River. The departure point for water taxis to southern beaches like Las Ánimas, Quimixto, and Yelapa.
Tip: Have lunch at one of the riverside restaurants and catch a water taxi to explore the southern beaches.
Las Caletas
A secluded beach that was once the private retreat of film director John Huston. Now operated exclusively by Vallarta Adventures with all-inclusive day experiences.
Tip: This is a premium all-inclusive experience. Book directly through Vallarta Adventures.
Tequila Town
Visit the birthplace of tequila! Tour agave fields, learn about tequila production, visit historic distilleries, and sample Mexico's most famous spirit.
Tip: This is a long day trip. Consider an organized tour or stay overnight. The Jose Cuervo Express train is a unique experience.
Guadalajara
Mexico's second-largest city offers colonial architecture, mariachi music in Plaza de los Mariachis, world-class museums, and the nearby town of Tlaquepaque for artisan shopping.
Tip: Consider an overnight stay to fully experience the city. Day trips are rushed but possible.
