Getting Around Puerto Vallarta

Transportation options for navigating the city

Puerto Vallarta is relatively easy to navigate with multiple transportation options to suit every budget. From affordable local buses to convenient ride-sharing apps, here's everything you need to know about getting around.

Taxis

Taxis are plentiful throughout Puerto Vallarta. They're safe, convenient, and relatively affordable compared to US/Canadian prices.

Taxi Tips

  • • Taxis don't use meters - agree on a price before getting in
  • • Fares are based on zones, not distance
  • • Short trips within a zone: $50-80 MXN ($3-5 USD)
  • • Longer trips (e.g., downtown to Marina): $100-150 MXN ($6-9 USD)
  • • Fares are higher at night and during holidays
  • • Most drivers speak some English in tourist areas

Uber & Ride-Sharing

Uber and DiDi both operate in Puerto Vallarta and are popular with tourists for their convenience and upfront pricing.

Ride-Sharing Benefits

  • • Upfront pricing - no negotiating
  • • Cashless payment through the app
  • • Often cheaper than traditional taxis
  • • Track your ride and share trip details
  • • Driver ratings for peace of mind

Note: There has been tension between Uber drivers and taxi unions. Some areas like the Malecón may have limited Uber availability. If you can't get an Uber, a taxi is always a reliable alternative.

Local Buses

Local buses are the cheapest way to get around Puerto Vallarta. They run frequently along main routes and are used by both locals and adventurous tourists.

Bus Information

  • • Fare: $10-12 MXN (less than $1 USD)
  • • Pay the driver in cash when boarding
  • • Buses display their destination on the windshield
  • • Main routes run along the Malecón and to the Hotel Zone
  • • "Centro" buses go to downtown
  • • Buses run from early morning until around 10pm

Walking

Walking is one of the best ways to experience Puerto Vallarta, especially in the downtown area, Zona Romántica, and along the famous Malecón boardwalk.

Best Areas for Walking

  • Malecón: The iconic mile-long boardwalk with sculptures and ocean views
  • Zona Romántica: Charming streets filled with restaurants, shops, and galleries
  • Centro: Historic downtown with the famous church and main plaza
  • Marina Vallarta: Waterfront promenade with restaurants and yacht views

Tip: Wear comfortable shoes - many streets are cobblestone. Stay hydrated and use sunscreen, especially midday.

Water Taxis

Water taxis offer scenic transportation to beaches and towns that are only accessible by boat, like Yelapa, Las Ánimas, and Quimixto.

Water Taxi Details

  • • Depart from Los Muertos Pier in Zona Romántica
  • • Round-trip to Yelapa: approximately $400-500 MXN ($25-30 USD)
  • • Journey time: 45 minutes to 1 hour
  • • Multiple departures throughout the day
  • • Last return typically around 4-5pm

Car Rentals

Renting a car is useful if you plan to explore beyond Puerto Vallarta, visit nearby towns like Sayulita or San Pancho, or prefer complete independence.

Car Rental Tips

  • • Major rental companies available at the airport and in town
  • • Mexican car insurance is required by law
  • • Book in advance for better rates, especially during high season
  • • A credit card is typically required for the deposit
  • • Parking can be challenging in downtown areas
  • • Consider a compact car for narrow streets

Important: You don't need a car for most Puerto Vallarta activities. Taxis, Uber, and buses are sufficient for getting around town. Rent only if you plan to explore the wider region.
